John Ashworth co-founder of Linksoul and Ashworth Golf has a lifetime passion of golf. His passion of the game began when he left Sunday school to begin caddieing for his father, Mark Wiebe. After graduating from college, Ashworth worked for Gerry Montiel’s Denver-based sports goods companies as a merchandising buyer for golf and tennis. Later on, Montiel offered to bring Ashworth along for his next project—liquidating multiple retail stores.
Originally thinking about launching a garments line and marketing it to the golf community, Ashworth thought golf wear was terrible. As Montiel liked the idea, Ashworth should become the brand name. The company was sold later on, but Ashworth kept an eye on golf apparel. Originally born from the term “Tempus Fugit (time flies), Linksoul was co-founded by Ashworth and Geoff Cunningham in association with a group of family and friends.” The group gathered under the concept that one’s main focus should be on how one spends their time since a life full of family, friends, physical activity, creativity, and nature is a well-lived existence. In that style of thinking as much as in the company itself, where Friday golf participation is mandated, golf is vital.
Linksoul’s product concept derives much of its inspiration from Ashworth’s initial first business venture. He sought to seem cool and have his own style even as a young golfer and understood precisely what he wanted to wear. He considered it not very cool to be a golfer when he began high school, so he never even told people he was on the golf team. Southern California native Ashworth was more influenced by surf companies like Hang Ten and OP.

Linksoul, a Southern California firm, is well-known for its soft-hand fabrics and comfort-first attitude. Goat Hill Park presents a unique golf experience by combining the SoCal terrain and cultural nonchalance with elements from several blue-collar clubs in the UK and Europe. Mostly showcasing Linksoul products, the small pro store feels like an expansion of Linksoul’s Highway 101 “Lab,” a beautifully designed and impeccably merchandised boutique.
Comprising a handmade wooden ping-pong table, surfboards, skateboards, and whiskey cabinet, the Linksoul Lab seems like the welcome lovechild of a Scottish links clubhouse and a California surf store. Attached to the offices where Ashworth and I met to talk, the retail section of the business faces front. Both properties are in modest Oceanside, the northernmost city in San Diego County, whose blue-collar past still proudly glows against the backdrop of constructing cranes and property developers fiercely seeking to monetarily smooth away its roughness.
